Richard D Rowe Award

Biography

The Richard Rowe Research Prize is awarded annually to an individual for outstanding research in heart disease in children undertaken during training. The colleagues and friends of Dick Rowe established this prize as a tribute to his many contributions to pediatric cardiology. Dick Rowe was universally admired for his clinical skills, his compassion, his teaching, and his research. His encouragement of junior colleagues during training profoundly benefited many individuals. While Dick Rowe’s achievements were international, he has a special place in the development of pediatric cardiology in Canada, and it is hoped that this prize will help to foster the ideals to which he aspired.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants may be from all levels of trainees including Residents, Fellows, Graduate or Medical students, and must:

  • attend a Canadian institution or Canadian training abroad, and be either in training or completed training within the twelve months prior to submission.
  • have research relate to heart disease in children.
  • have had significant conceptual input into its development and have largely performed the research.

Selection process

The CPCA Secretary forward one copy of each submission to each of the three pediatric abstract reviewers. The reviewers select the best three papers for presentation at a Pediatric Cardiology Session preceding the Annual Business meeting of the CPCA. The CPCA reserves the right to select fewer than three papers, or to award no prize if entries are of insufficient quality.

Each applicant has a 15 minutes presentation, with a five-minute question period. The final selection of the winner will be the responsibility of the Pediatric Abstract Reviewers and the President of the CPCA.

Each applicant is judged on originality of the work, scientific validity, presentation, and response to questions. Entries not selected for this competition will be eligible for the other scientific sessions based on evaluation of the accompanying abstract.

Presentation

The winner is announced by the CPCA President at the CPCA Business Meeting. The prize is presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Edmonton. The winner receive a $500 cash award, a framed certificate and his/her name will be added to an honour plaque maintained by the CPCA.
