Workshop
Annual Meeting 2002
Monday, October 28
16:30 to 18:00
Chair: Dr. Anne Dipchand
Cardiac transplantation is becoming an increasingly viable management strategy for end-stage cardiac disease in children, and there is a growing population of survivors of transplantation whose complex care requires considerable expertise. As cardiac transplantation in children has only been performed for a relatively short period of time, and because care of these patients is increasingly being referred back to their home units, there is a critical need for education for health care professionals who may find themselves responsible for advising patients and families, or providing ongoing direct care.
Objectives of the workshop:
- To understand the indications for cardiac transplantation in the pediatric age group, in order to appropriately select potential candidates.
- To understand the process of pre-transplantation evaluation and its rationale.
- To understand to mechanisms and current regimens regarding immunosuppression after transplantation, and issues relevant to the pediatric age group.
- To know the long-term surveillance and outcomes.
- To understand the psychosocial impact on the patient and family, and its relationship to overall health status and quality of life.
